What wild food can I find in February?

Answer

By Anonymous

February is best for…wild nettles

This month’s foraging advice from Andrew Price at Dryad Bushcraft, Wales
Found in wasteground and roadside verges
Won’t it sting me? Pluck them from above to avoid stings, grab the top two leaves and bud from the top
Use for nettle tea, put 8-10 shoots in a mug of hot water and allow to infuse
Good for full of nutrients for a post Christmas detox

The haggis is just coming out of hibernation now and are still pretty sluggish.  No chance of catching them later in the season but this early are fairly easy prey.  As everyone knows they can't change direction quickly so approach them head on.  By the time they realise they're trangia fodder, they are likely to run directly towards you.  Just don't let them run between your legs and you've got supper.

Rose Hips- cut them in half, de-seed them and scape out the hairs, then steep them in boiled water for a  few minutes, drink the water and buy the time your at the bottom the rose hips should be soft, eat away.

Pond Lillies- obviously you may get wet, but try and get to the root, scrape away outer layer and boil in several changes of water to reduce the earthy taste, just like a potato really. Also bull rushes can be done the same way.

Pine needle tea is another obvious one, cut the needles up and steep in boiled water.

And of course any beasties that you can catch. Game, fish, worms(remove inners), snails. Also try smashing open a rotten tree stump or large fallen branch cos there maybe some grubs in there. Try to get over any squimishness and just munch em down....he he...im talking from experience.
