Dr Sian Firth from Expedition Medicine says, “There’s no need to rely on expensive, tasteless dehydrated food for expeditions. Your local supermarket is stuffed with tasty, high-energy, lightweight alternatives.”
Lightweight expedition food tips:
1 Start the day with dried porridge oats – measure out beforehand with sugar, dried milk and raisins. Add hot water at camp and you are fuelled up for the morning.
2 Eat frequent snacks – you keep your energy level more constant with small, frequent munchies. Dried apples are extremely light, while macadamia nuts and cranberries make lightweight alternative to peanuts and raisins.
3 Remove excess packaging – decant tuna cans into bags, and buy the ones in dressings to make lunch less dry and more exciting
4 Use wraps not bread – for dense carbohydrate with less bulk, roll tuna or cheese up in a tortilla wrap that doesn’t squash so easily
5 Here’s a lightweight three-course meal – packet soup with croutons; packet pasta/couscous for one person; Swiss roll crumbled into instant custard.
6 Lightweight drinks – take pre-measured packets of hot chocolate or Horlicks. For more energy read their nutrition tables and choose the higher-calorie options.
