How do I start a new fitness plan?

Answer

By Anonymous

To make real fitness progress and get more out of your hill-walking you need to start planning your goals now, says personal development coach Jack Russell.
“Researchers at Harvard University in the USA found that in a year group only 3 per cent of students set goals,” says Jack. “After 20 years they found that the group who set goals were tangibly richer financially, physically, mentally and emotionally than the 97 per cent who chose not to. When a resolution becomes a goal the results can be much longer lasting.” Here’s how to plan to get fitter...

1. Remember that 21 days is the vital point. If you can introduce a change for that period of time it will then become habitual.
2. Make your goal compelling. See it. Hear it. Think it. Believe it.
3. Set small, specific goals like going for a run twice a week, biking to work or drinking two litres of water a day.
4. Tell friends and family what your resolutions are so that you get their support.

I agree with 'robbo' on checking with your GP first and with 'Sleepless' about giving yourself a goal.  As a London personal trainer, I have clients who want to get fit for charity treks or other outdoor activities such as snowboarding or surfing.  I ensure that their training combines a solid base of general fitness: cardiovascular conditioning together with strength.  In addition, my clients will also perform more 'event-specific' training - including hill running, balance training or performing 'pop-ups' (e.g. for surfing).

good idea to see the GP. saw mine in December and she told me to see the healthy living nurse (sounds nice I thought!)

She helped me with a fitness plan to fit in around family and work and also gave advice on food.

basically, start with small changes.

Ive lost 2 stone and can now fell run as well as I did 4 year. My blood pressure is spot on as well.

so it does work .

self motivation was my biggest trouble. read Zen Running. it gives good tips and stories as to how to apply Zen (empty mind) to your life.

RE: How do I start a new fitness plan?

A fitness plan is essential if you want to accomplish your fitness goals. Sometimes we're in such a rush to get to the end, we run as fast as we can only to peter-out in the middle. Not this time. Your fitness plan will be solid and you will accomplish it.
