I've suffered from a hard callous on the ball of my right foot for a few years, and having sought advice the diagnosis is a "Plantarflexed Metatarsal" (I think), which apparently I have on both feet. I had some prosthetic insoles made privately, but they seem to cause other problems. I've also been to the NHS, but they're next to useless. How can I find a better solution from someone I can trust? Would superfeet help?

Podiatrist Andrew Stanley says: "If you have a plantar-flexed 1st ray (the first metatarsal sits lower than the other four), this results in a high pressure area on the ball of the foot and the subsequent callus, orthotics should help.

"Usually they have an additional forefoot extension with a cut for the first metatarsal joint to even out the pressure in the forefoot where the callus occurs. It may be that the “private” orthotics are not that well designed at present and need modifying or “re-doing”. Go back to the Podiatrist and ask if this is possible, there shouldn’t be a charge for this as the orthotics haven’t worked."
