This is a festival held to celebrate the Himalayan people, their culture and landscapes. In 2007 the event, which was held as part of the National Mountaineering Exhibition at Rheged, Cumbria from 21-27 October, comprised of an authentic Nepalese market, talks from famous mountaineers such as Chris Bonington and Mike Fowler, photographic exhibitions, music family-friendly activities, yoga lessons and the opportunity to meet people who live and work in the Himalayas. The event was the brainchild of legendary mountaineer Doug Scott, who told Trail, “It’s designed to raise awareness of the importance of the Himalaya and Tibetan plateau and their indigenous communities, and, in the interests of diversity, help them preserve their unique culture.” If you want to find out more about the festival, enquire about next year’s event or discover why Doug Scott is so devoted to all things Himalayan, visit the site of his mountaineers’ charity, Community Action Nepal– www.canepal.org.uk
