Can I use C1 Crampons with my Meindl Vakuums? Or are they too flexible?
By Trail magazine
Winter walking boots need to be stiff enough to be fitted with crampons for safety and security on ice and snow slopes. To help you choose the correct crampons for your boots there’s an industry standard that rates the boot stiffness in terms of B1, B2 and B3 and crampon flexibility – as C1, C2 and C3. The lower the number the more flexible the sole/crampon. Crampon compatibility:B1 boots can be used with C1 cramponsB2 boots can be used with C2 or C1 cramponsB3 boots can be used with C3, C2, or C1 cramponsUnfortunately Meindl Vakuum GTXs are rated as B0 so are not compatible with any crampons. You’re right – it’s because the sole is too flexible. You’ll want to look for a boot that is at least B1 to take a C1 crampon.

Personally I think the B0 rating is nonsense. I've had Burma Pro's and Vakuums fitted with 12 point flexible crampons without the slightest problem, provided you're walking and not expecting to front point up a waterfall they are fine. Something like the G10 Grivell or similar will be perfectly suited.

Having seen people use crampons with trainers, for a short time over very moderate terrain, I would think they would be ok for emergency use. If you are going into the hills with the intention of being on terrain where crampons are essential, then I would advise you to get a pair of boots that are suitable for the job.

Apparently they are rated B0, which means they are not compatible with C1 crampons. Don't know how they would go with the Kahtoola lightweight crampons, which are a bit 'controversial'.

I'm starting to lead climbs and am wondering what gear I need. What type of wires should I use? DMM, Wild Country, Black Diamond? What length of rope would be good? I was thinking 50m.
