I intend to walk the Ennerdale Horseshoe but turn it into a 2 dayer. Can you recommend sites to wild camp and would a tent or bivvi bag be best? I'm going mid june.

Sadly, wild camping is not a legal right in the hills of the Lake District (although it is tolerated as part of the tradition of hillwalking in the area). So it makes it tricky for us to list locations, as that would suggest that wild camping is recommended. Plus, the beauty of wild camping is that we all find our own little corner of perfection.

Having said that, I can suggest things to look for and rough areas where wild camping may be possible. The priority when wild camping is to seek areas far from footpaths and other hill-users, high on the mountains and ideally above the last intake walls (never in valleys). A level area is ideal, while a small stream is useful for collecting water. Also look for shelter from high winds, rather than an exposed site on open ground.

The entire eastern end of Ennerdale provides opportunities for wild camping. As there is a youth hostel in the valley head, wild campers should move a long way from this and look for sites high on the fells where they will not disturb others. The natural saddles of Beck Head and Black Sail are possible sites. Or the western slopes of Brandreth. You could even find pitches on the summit of Kirk Fell or Great Gable if you have a soft mattress for the rocky ground! The area around Black Beck Tarns is also possible.

Wherever you choose to lay your hat, the key is to camp responsibly. This means leaving no trace and blending into the environment. Dealing with human waste and rubbish of all kinds is one of the most important aspects of wild camping; all rubbish should be packed out. There is an excellent information sheet from the Mountaineering Council of Scotland on dealing with Human Sanitation that is as applicable in the Lake District as anywhere else. They also have an information sheet on wild camping

Always remember that all the land is owned by someone and if we want wild camping to remain available, it's essential we're responsible and respect other hill-users and land-owners. But have fun and enjoy a top Lake District route - and one of the country's best sunrise views!

By Blackbeck Tarn, on the slopes of Haystacks, is a good area. Decent pitches and water to hand.
