When Is The Time To Use A Bivvy Or Bothy Bag?

Answer

By Anonymous

If you find yourself in an emergency situation, stay calm and ask yourself this set of simple questions to find the logical solution:
Can I walk safely off the mountain? If yes,
do so: if you can get off the mountain without putting yourself at further risk, then that’s always the best option. If not…
Can I overnight safely? If your predicament isn’t putting you in immediate danger (for example, if the weather’s fine, you’re not injured and you’re confident you’ll be able to walk off the mountain in the morning), then get your bivvy out and set up camp. If not…
Can I summon help? Check if you have a mobile signal. If not, assess whether you can safely send other member(s) of your group to summon help. If not, do you have means of attracting attention, such as a whistle? If not, you will have to rely on the people with whom you left your route card to raise the alarm.
While you’re waiting for help to arrive, get into your bivvy or bothy bag to stay warm and dry – any emergency situation will be made a damn sight worse if you develop hypothermia.
