I need a 2-man tent that's fairly lightweight around 2.5kg max, has double skin, is 3 season, keeps out rain and is stable in wind. It's also got to have midge net. Will be doing a bit of wild camping in the Highlands. Budget is around £100 give or take. What would you suggest or recommend having a look at? Cheers!

There is a wide range of two-person, three-season tents with midge nets. Add in a weight limit of 2.5kg though and the options reduce drastically, and a price tag of £100 limits things further. There are some options though – see below – and as these are recommended retail prices, you may find something lighter on the pocket if you look around.

Highlander make some very low-priced tents such as the Jura 2 at £35 and 2.3kg. However, this has glass fibre poles which break more easily than alloy poles, and the design of a single ridge pole is not the most stable option, so may not be ideal for your plans of wild camping in the Highlands. The Highlander Forces 2 at £45 and 3.5kg is a more stable option, but of course it is heavier.

The Coleman Avior X2  at £90 and 2.45kg is another option - a two pole tunnel using alloy poles with a front and a side entrance so good for two campers. Note though, that stocks of this are low and some stores are indicating they are sold out, so you might have to search to find one – at the time of writing there were examples available on the web.

The Gelert Micron 2 is £80 and  2.2kg and has alloy poles. This is a single hoop design with a front porch and not much headroom. The Gelert Fusion 2 at £90 is a two-pole tunnel, so it offers a bit more space, but it weighs 2.78kg.

And Robens make a Small Dreamer tunnel tent that weighs 2.6kg for £90 and this has alloy poles, porch and side entry.

I would suggest taking a closer look at these – they can all be viewed online so you can compare sizes and features more closely.

I use a Vango Banshee 200. £60 and 2kg. Never had any problems with it so far. Alloy poles too. It is advertised as a 2 man but you will be close together in it.
