I was looking at 2-person £100 tents until I spoke to my dad - now I have decided to up the budget to about £150-£170-ish and want something that will survive in strong winds, heavy rain etc, that's also light enough to backpack with. I'm open to any suggestions, been looking at all the big names, just hoping for some good advice from some experienced voices!! Thanks Ian Oh and I want it to last, that's why I have upped the budget so that I don't have to buy another one for some time!

As you go up the price range you tend to get lighter tents for the same space, which makes the higher priced tents ideal for backpacking. If you want a tent to withstand really strong winds and heavier weather then you are going to have to compromise a little as lighter weight versions of these types of tents tend to get heavy. So like most things, it is all about weighing up pros and cons and deciding what you really need, as you can’t have everything at these price points.

The prices of tents quoted below are full recommended retail prices, so you might find them at lower prices on the internet which is why some break your budget, as you might find a bargain price somewhere!

Vaude Taurus 1, £145, 2.47kg, Trail magazine awarded it 'Best Value' in June 2008. Porch is a little small perhaps.

Blacks Octane 2, £150, 2.43kg. A two pole tunnel that is excellent in many ways, but the colours make this tent feel rather dank and gloomy.

The North Face Rock 22, £150, 2.67kg. Dome construction with good porches and lots of room. Inner pitch first though so not my favourite option for really wet pitching.
Full review

Vaude Hogan, £200, 3.2kg. Classic tent, Best Buy in various reviews, but a bit heavy. You might find one lower price if you look around.

Lightwave G1 Ion, £200, 2.23kg. Well you might find a bargain if you search the web! Three pole geodesic design so very stable. Inner pitch first so not ideal for wet days, but that is only drawback. Superb tent if you can stretch to the price or find a deal.
