I'm wanting to start wild camping on a small budget. What would be a good 2-person tent to start out with - plus my walking buddy is 6 foot 3.

A 6ft 3in camper is never going to find a 2-person tent that is long enough, sadly, as all tents of this type are pretty much the same length inside. The only way around the problem is for him to learn to sleep slightly curled up!
You can get a good 2-person backpacking tent that’s suitable for wild camping for around £150. I would say the best option is the Vaude Taurus 1, currently £145. This is pitched outer-first, it’s very stable and it’s a good all-rounder.
The North Face Rock 22 (£150) is a more spacious option in a dome style, and this has the benefit of two entrances and two porches plus lots of headroom. However it pitches inner-first so it’s not ideal in really wet weather. That said, as it is a bit larger it may be better for your tall friend.
We will be doing a review of tents similar to this and including these models in the June issue of Trail, out on 29 April.

Re: What's a good 2-person tent for wild camping?

I have a quick question. Finally I may be getting around to me first wild camp in the Lakes, possibly the last week in August. Firstly, anyone ever had issues with bright tents? I've read a few things about using tents that blend into the landscape, but my MSR Hubba one man is bright orange. Pic attached. Anyone had trouble with this?

While I'm here... what's it like wild camping during school holidays? Get any hassle since there are more people around generally?

Any quiet nice places recommended?

Cheers, Pav

Danny, I have a Vaude Taurus II. Excellant tent weighing in at under 3 kilos. I've used it for about 3 yrs now for wild camping and my only complaint is that the flysheet can contact the inner in wind (or with pressure from your legs whilst asleep) leaving you with a damp foot to your sleeping bag. Vaude have since corrected this problem by adding a couple of extra guylines at the base of the tent. It depends on how light you want to go though in terms of what you choose

I've got the Vango TBS Spirit 200, and it a good tent, very waterproof as discovered a couple of weekends ago in North Wales, good and roomy, excellent porch and if you split the tent up between you and your mate you'll only be carrying about 1.3kilos each.
