Is there a ‘code’ for wild camping?

Answer

By Anonymous

The good wild camper is characterised by his or her absence: no-one – least of all the landowner – ever notices they’re even there:

- Never pitch below the highest fence line or wall.

- Never pitch close to a right of way.

- Try to pitch out of sight: you should certainly be out of sight of any roads and houses or farms; you should preferably be out of sight of any rights of way.

- Keep your group as small as possible.

- If you reach your intended site to find a tent already pitched, go search for another site.

- Don’t pitch on land that is obviously being used for a specific purpose, other than upland sheep grazing.

- Try to use a tent or bivvy bag that’s an inconspicuous colour.

- Don’t pitch your tent before dusk; aim to strike camp early.
