I read with interest in Country Walking (October 2009) that iodine was to be banned from 26th Oct 2009. I am about to travel to Nepal for a walking holiday in late April 2010 and the information on treatment of local water is with iodine. In the mountains purifying water by boiling it is not possible as the porters see this as a wasted resource. Can you then advise me on my problem?

It's true that iodine has now been banned thanks to the EU Biocides Directive (even though many people still consider it perfectly safe). If boiling water is not a viable alternative then you'll need to use chlorine or chlorine-diox to chemically treat it.

Chlorine is the cheaper alternative (about £5 for 70 litres purification) but can leave a nasty swimming-pool taste so you may need to spend another fiver on neutralising tablets to make it drinkable. The more expensive and most effective treatment though is chlorine-diox, with the added advantage it has minimal aftertaste. Lifesystems make tablets and drops from £9.99 for 30 litres worth of treatment.

When I went around the web and found www.essaybox.com I was so surprised because it seemed like I have discovered a new world there. So I do suggest that everybody else goes there too!
